Combat Industrial Espionage With Counter Surveillance

Losing valuable information through industrial espionage can be extremely damaging to a business. If information on research, marketing plans, take-overs and mergers fall into the hands of competitors it can result in the swift failure of carefully planned projects, as well as wasting valuable resources poured into developing them.

However, rather than wait until falling victim to industrial espionage, there are actions an organisation can take to prevent falling foul of covert surveillance. Employing professionals to conduct regular counter surveillance programmes ensures confidential business information remains secure.

These programmes are made up of a number of counter surveillance practices, tailored to suit the particular situation.

Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM)

A Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM) inspection is used by organisations to enhance the security of their business meetings and confidential information.

TSCM, also known as bug sweeping, is the process of carrying out electronic and physical inspections to identify the presence of eavesdropping devices. A bug sweeping team use state of the art electronic search equipment to spot both active and passive bugging devices including audio recorders, video recorders, telephone bugs and keystroke logging mechanisms.

To ensure that the spy’s suspicions aren’t aroused, which could result in the removal of bugging devices, TSCM inspections are carried out covertly. This usually involves the inspection being conducted outside of normal office hours with an appropriate cover story in place.

TSCM inspections can cover offices, buildings, vehicles, telephone systems and cabling. Computers and word-processors can also be inspected to check for information leaks. TSCM checks can even be carried out on yachts and private aircraft.

Physical Security Reviews

A physical security review is an expert assessment of the physical security arrangements in place for an organisation. This involves an inspection of all aspects of physical security and their effectiveness in protecting a business’s premises and assets.

What is typically covered within an inspection includes locks, access control, CCTV, waste management, executive transportation and asset protection.

Once a review has been carried out a report is produced detailing the current physical security arrangements and areas for improving levels of security. This is then used to help install the necessary security measures to protect both premises and assets, as well as create security standards and procedures for use within an organisation.

Commercial Tiger Testing

Commercial Tiger Testing, which has its origins in the United States Air Force was originally a technique used to test the defences of their air bases. The aim of a Tiger Test is for the test team to gain unauthorised access to specified assets or areas.

This technique has been developed for businesses and organisations where Tiger Teams are employed to use whatever non-violent means to gain unauthorised access to valuable assets, information and areas. The way in which this access is acquired is then analysed to identify physical, procedural or technical vulnerabilities and implement suitable counter measures.

QCC Interscan are TSCM experts with a wealth of experience in conducing counter surveillance programmes for a wide range of international businesses and organisations.
