So What is a Video Phone and Why Would I Want One?

I happened to run across someone who was marketing a device called a video phone.  With the advent of skype and web cams, you would think that a device like this would be somewhat obsolete.  Who would want a video phone with a service charge each month when you can hop on the web for free?  While I can understand your hesitancy to embrace this technology, let’s take a look at some of its advantages along with the trends in electronic and telecommunications.

Primarily, the video phone could replace your traditional home phone service.  While everything else in information technology has gone digital, one thing hasn’t made the complete conversion.  The Alexander Graham Bell telephone system.  VHS tapes became DVDs.  Polaroid cameras went digital.  Records evolved to cassette tapes, cassette tapes to CDs, and CDs to MP3s.  Even our television signal went digital.  I don’t recall being asked permission whether I wanted to replace my VCR player, but I would be remiss to think I could go into Blockbuster and pick up a VHS tape.  Let’s face it.  Our world is going digital, and if we think that landline telephone service is going to be around for the next generation, we may still think that the world is flat!

I say that in jest, but with companies marketing digital phone service using VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology, digital service is definitely the wave of the future.  So what are the advantages?  Digital phone service, as we have seen with other digital devices, allows greater flexibility, enhanced features and lower costs.  Additionally, there are limited to no taxes because you’re using the internet, so your bill remains constant, and there little to no fluctuations from month to month.  How about the ability to leave video mail messages when the person doesn’t answer?  Or be able to record a video greeting for that personal touch?  Can you imagine leaving the country, taking your video phone with you, plugging into a high speed internet connection anywhere in the world, and calling back to North America without being charged international rates?  It’s all possible with digital phone service with video phones.  Not to mention that you have a built in digital phone frame, can digitally enable your entire home, and even plug into your big screen television for video conferencing capabilities.  It’s so simple, even a 3 year old can use it.

The video phone keeps you personally connected to the people you know, love, and do business with around the world.  What if grandparents could see the grandchild’s first steps?  What if you could check on an elderly relative from time to time to make sure they’re doing alright?  What if a husband on business for days or weeks at a time could call home and see his wife face to face?  The possibilities are endless, and the technology is available today.  Welcome to the Jetsons age!
